£1.00
Its common name derives from its black and orange-yellow striped coloration and its hissing sound when disturbed, which is produced when they forcefully expel air through the specially-adapted respiratory openings (spiracles) on the fourth segment of their body. Body length varies around 35–50 mm for females, and 40–50 mm in males.

They can be kept in a terrarium or other enclosure with plenty of hiding spots and a shallow water dish. A screen top is important to prevent escapes. A temperature range of 77–82°F during the day and mid to high 70°F at night is ideal. You can use a heat pad or heat lamp to keep them warmer.HumidityKeep the humidity between 60–80%. You can mist the enclosure with water every other day.DietFeed them fresh fruits and vegetables, and occasionally add protein sources like fish flakes or dog food.SubstrateYou can use coconut fiber kept slightly damp as a substrate. You can also add a layer of leaf litter or rotting wood to create a forest floor-like layer.LifespanHissing cockroaches typically live 2–3 years, but can live up to 4 or 5 years with excellent care.
